Roadside Assistance 101: What to Do If You Have a Flat Tire

Few things can throw a wrench into your plans like a flat tire. You don’t want to be stranded on the side of the road, whether you’re on a road trip or commuting to work. But if it does happen, it’s critical to know what to do when you have a flat tire and need roadside assistance. At D&R Towing, you can always rely on us to get you out of a jam if you have a flat tire or other car trouble.

It always pays to be prepared! Here’s what you should do if you have a flat tire and need roadside assistance.

Stay Calm

First, don’t panic. Turn on your hazards and find a safe spot to pull away from traffic. Once you’re safely parked, assess the damage. If you don’t know how to change a tire or you don’t have the necessary tools, it’s time to call for roadside assistance.

Call for Help

Most drivers can get roadside assistance through their insurance company, or you can call us at D&R Towing directly. Make sure you have those numbers saved in your phone or written down somewhere in your car so you can find them easily when you need them. When you call for assistance, you’ll need to provide your location, vehicle description, and details about what happened.

Stay Safe While You Wait

While you wait for help to arrive, your priority is keeping yourself safe. If you have reflective triangles or flares, place them behind your vehicle to increase visibility, especially on a busy road. Turn on your interior lights to make your car more noticeable to passing drivers if it’s dark.

Use Your Spare

If you have a spare and the necessary tools, you can change the tire yourself. However, you should only do so if it’s safe. For example, if you’re on a highway with a wide breakdown lane, you should be fine. However, if you’re on a busy road with not much of a shoulder, it’s better to wait.
